Out near Sapwi Trails Community Park in Thousand Oaks, a night shift janitor flagged me down about his 2018 Rogue. Another locksmith had made him a key about eight days earlier. It worked at first, then started throwing "KEY NOT DETECTED" on the dash every evening. Mornings it would start. By the end of his shift, nothing. He thought the car had an electrical gremlin.
It didn't. The key had the wrong chip.
His Rogue runs NATS6 with a Hitag AES transponder. That matters because a close-but-wrong chip, say a standard Hitag3 or older PCF7952, can pass initial registration on the BCM but fail after the system runs its rolling cryptographic verification over multiple drive cycles. The car figures out the chip can't keep up with the challenge-response and locks it out.
I pulled his bad fob apart on the hood. Read the transponder with my programmer, confirmed it was the wrong generation. Programmed a new KR5TXN4 with the correct Hitag AES chip matched to his BCM. His CR2032 was also low, which was making detection range flaky on top of everything else. Swapped that too.
He stood there watching the dash the whole time, waiting for the warning to come back. It didn't.
That was months ago. Still working. The difference between a key that lasts a week and one that lasts years is the chip generation inside it.
