My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard job. I carry the tools to pull the fragment out without tearing up the cylinder. The catch with Nissan ignitions is that once a key snaps off inside, the wafers and internal channel can take damage from the break or from someone trying to work it out with the wrong tool. So even after the piece comes out clean, the cylinder may not be far behind it.

Once it's out, I can decode the cut from the fragment or pull the key data another way and cut a replacement on site. If the cylinder needs to come out too, that gets handled the same visit. One trip, not three.

What exactly is a smart key and what makes it different from a regular key?

Your 2017 Rogue uses the Nissan Intelligent Key system. The fob itself handles door locking, unlocking, and the other button functions remotely. It also carries a transponder that the immobilizer reads when you press the start button. No recognized signal, no start.

The fob has a mechanical backup blade folded inside. If the battery dies completely or something fails electronically, you can use that blade to get in through the door cylinder, and the backup-start method through the start button itself can sometimes get you moving.

If the fob casing cracks but the internals are intact, I can move the electronics into a new shell. If the fob is fully gone, I cut and program a replacement on site. Either way it gets done at your car, not at a service counter.

Question 3

My Nissan shows a key-not-detected warning. What should I try first?

Start with the CR2032. These fobs go through batteries faster than most people expect, and a low battery on a 2017 Rogue can show up as an intermittent detection warning before it dies all the way. Pop the battery out, check the contacts for corrosion or that dull film, and seat a fresh one with firm pressure.

If you have a low battery and you need to start right now, hold the fob against the brake-side of the start button and push normally. That's the built-in backup path on this system.

If a fresh battery doesn't fix it and the backup method isn't helping, the problem is somewhere else. Could be the fob antenna, could be the fob itself, could be the car's own battery running low enough to drop antenna voltage. That's when you call me.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need someone with tools?

You need someone with tools. The 2017 Rogue Intelligent Key does not have an onboard self-programming sequence. There's no ignition-turn trick, no button combination that registers a new fob. That approach only applies to older Nissan models with a basic transponder key in an ignition cylinder. The Intelligent Key system on this generation requires programming through the diagnostic port with dedicated equipment. If you already bought the fob, that's fine, bring it. I can program a customer-supplied fob as long as it's the correct one for this vehicle. Just confirm the factory FCC ID on the fob matches before you order.

Can the door handle touch sensor stop working on just one door while the key itself is fine?

Yes, and it happens. The 2017 Rogue has capacitive touch sensors in the door handles for locking and unlocking. If one door stops responding but the fob buttons still work and the car starts normally, the fob is almost certainly not the problem. Those sensors can fail on their own, collect enough grime to stop reading reliably, or have a wiring issue isolated to that door.

Wipe the handle area down first and retest. If it stays dead on one door only, you're looking at that handle's sensor or the wiring behind it, not the key.
