I was out in Mission Oaks on a Sunday, parked in a lot near the Sikh temple off Ponderosa Drive. The call had come in the day before from a committee member who'd already been through it with another locksmith and was done being patient about it.
His 2022 Rogue would crank. Engine would catch. Then it would die after about two seconds, every time. The previous tech had told him it was a module problem and walked away after taking payment. It wasn't a module problem.
What had happened was the key data got written incompletely. The immobilizer on this generation Rogue has a timed security sequence during registration. If that sequence gets interrupted or rushed, the car can accept the key temporarily, enough to let the engine fire, but it won't write the registration to permanent memory. So the car starts and then the security system cuts it off. Looks like a fuel or module fault. It's not.
I verified the mechanical cut on the blade was correct, then connected through the OBD port and pulled the registration status. The previous attempt had left partial data sitting there. I cleared it, ran a clean registration with the full security timer allowed to complete, and confirmed the write. All five buttons on the fob came up functional. Car started and stayed running.
I showed him the confirmation screen so he could see the key was fully written this time, not just temporarily accepted. He asked me to explain the two-second stall to his wife so she'd understand it wasn't something wrong with the car. I did.
He'd already paid the first guy. I couldn't fix that. But I could make sure the second attempt was the last one he needed.
