I got a call from a couple in Woodcreek, Camarillo, late on a Saturday. They'd been out hiking earlier in the day, came back to their 2007 Xterra, and the remote head key was doing almost nothing. The blade still turned the ignition and the car started, but the lock and unlock buttons were dead and they were manually keying into the door every time. The car already started fine throughout, so the transponder side never needed touching. That's the thing about these remote head keys: two separate functions inside one unit, and one can fail without the other. I didn't need to touch the immobilizer, didn't need to reprogram anything, just fixed what was actually broken.
