Almost always the battery. The CR1620 in this fob is a low-capacity cell, and when it drops below a useful voltage the radio signal cuts out while the transponder chip -- which is passive and doesn't draw power -- keeps working fine. That's why the car starts but the locks won't respond. Swap the CR1620 first.

A guy came back to Midtown Ventura on a Tuesday after a work trip and his 2015 Xterra just sat there. No response from the fob, doors locked, and his emergency blade was buried in a laptop bag in the back seat.

Not the trunk -- the back seat -- but it didn't matter because he didn't know the blade was in the fob housing to begin with. He'd never needed it.

He called the Nissan dealer first. Earliest available appointment was Thursday. He called a tow company and got a quote that made the dealer look reasonable. Then he found me.

He asked if he needed a whole reprogramming job. He didn't. The battery was the whole story.

I showed him where the blade lives in the housing before I left. He tested it himself, sliding it in and out of the door lock twice so it was muscle memory. That part mattered more to him than the fix did. The dealer would have had him waiting two days and paying for a full service appointment for a dead CR1620.
