2008 Nissan Xterra Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A call came in from a guy parked near a business lot off of one of the main commercial strips up in Camarillo Heights. He had a 2008 Xterra and had been using a cracked remote head key for a few months.
The shell was held together with electrical tape. He told me the lock and unlock buttons still worked most of the time, but lately the engine was giving him grief on cold starts, which he figured was just a truck thing.
It was not a truck thing.
The crack in the housing had let moisture get into the fob internals, and the connection to the transponder was intermittent. Not dead. Just unreliable enough to cause random no-start behavior. He had already done a battery swap thinking that was it.
I pulled out a replacement remote head key, cut it to the vehicle, and programmed it through the OBD port. On the 2008 Xterra, the immobilizer registers new keys through the diagnostic port, and the process is methodical. The system runs through its handshake, confirms the key, and that is it. From parking lot to done was about 25 minutes.
He tested the locks, the unlock, and the third button, then started the truck twice just to feel good about it. No hesitation, no drama.
He had called the dealer earlier in the week. They wanted him to bring it in, quoted him a number that made him pause, and could not get him in for several days. He mentioned it almost as an afterthought. I did not bring it up.
