A nursing student near Ventura Pier called me from her apartment breezeway. She had already called the dealer. They told her to tow the Xterra in and wait a few days for parts.
Her 2011 Xterra's only remote head key had cracked along the seam where the shell meets the blade. The rubber button pad was peeling out, the circuit board was half-exposed, and the CR1620 was barely held in place. She had been pressing the lock button through a piece of tape for a week. She figured a new key from Nissan was just going to be one of those expenses.
I parked behind her Xterra and decoded the door lock with my NSN14 Lishi. That tool is made for Nissan's edge-cut keyway, the same profile they run across the truck and SUV lineup. Once I had the cuts, I set up a new CWTWB1U751 blank and cut it on the truck's tailgate.
Programming the PCF7936 transponder through the OBD port took a couple of minutes. The NATS5 system accepted it clean, SECURITY light went solid then off, engine fired right up. Then I cycled all three buttons: lock, unlock, panic. Walked the perimeter checking range.
She stood there holding the old cracked key in one hand and the new one in the other, just comparing them. The whole job was about 35 minutes, right there in her breezeway, for a fraction of what the dealer wanted before towing was even in the picture.
