Got a call from the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center area on a Tuesday afternoon. Guy had a 1998 Jetta sitting in the lot and said the key wouldn't start it. Engine cranked strong but never caught. Classic immobilizer lockout.
When I got there, he showed me the key. The plastic housing was cracked right down the spine and the flip blade was loose. He'd been fighting it for a couple days, jamming it into the ignition at an angle just to get it to turn. At some point the ID48 transponder chip inside the head shifted just enough that the Immo2 reader coil around the ignition cylinder couldn't pick it up anymore. Dash was throwing the immobilizer warning light, steady on, which on these Mk3 clusters means the system isn't seeing a valid transponder at all.
I cut a new HU66 blade on a fresh 1J0959753F flip shell, seated a new ID48 chip, and connected through the OBD-II port to adapt the transponder to his Immo2 module using the SKC login. Once the cluster accepted the new chip, the engine fired on the first turn. Tested all four buttons on the remote, lock, unlock, trunk, panic, and let it cycle a few times.
He said he'd been quoted a tow plus a multi-day wait at the dealer. His car never left the lot and the whole thing took about 40 minutes.
