2020 Volkswagen Jetta
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long should a replacement key for this Jetta hold up?

A long time, assuming normal use. The transponder chip inside is solid-state and doesn't wear out. What does wear on VW keys over the years is the plastic shell, particularly the keyring loop, and on flip-style designs the pivot pin for the blade. The 2020 Jetta uses a fixed-blade transponder key, so there's no switchblade mechanism to fail. The main thing to avoid is using the key as a bottle opener or hanging a heavy keychain from it.

Q: What if the key you made stops working after a few weeks?

Call me and I come back. That's it. Every key I make is covered. If it loses start function or develops any issue under normal use, I fix it or replace it at no charge. I test every key before I leave the job, running the ignition multiple times to confirm the immobilizer recognizes the new chip consistently, not just once.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made without having my original key with me?

Yes. All-keys-lost situations are a standard job on this vehicle. If you've lost every key, the process is a bit more involved because I have to decode the blade from the lock itself rather than copying an existing key, and the security access sequence for enrolling a new transponder when no valid key is present takes longer than adding a spare. The immobilizer has to go through a full re-enrollment.

Q: Why won't the car start after I had a key cut at a hardware store?

Hardware stores cut the blade shape but they have no way to program the transponder chip. The 2020 Jetta's immobilizer reads the chip in the key every time you turn the ignition. If it doesn't recognize the chip, it kills the start signal. You can have a perfectly cut blade and still get nothing but a no-start. The car isn't broken. It just doesn't recognize the key as authorized.

2020 Volkswagen Jetta Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman who works out of a small office near the Ormond Beach industrial stretch in Oxnard. She hadn't lost her key yet, but she was down to one and had been meaning to get a spare made for months.

A coworker had recently been stranded after a key broke off in the ignition on a different car, and that was enough to finally make her pick up the phone.

She met me in the parking lot on her lunch break. She handed me the key and went back inside, which I always appreciate. No audience, no hovering.

I decoded the blade profile from her existing key and cut a new one to match on my machine. Then came the part that separates this job from a hardware store duplicate: I connected to the OBD port, ran security access, retrieved the vehicle PIN, and enrolled the new transponder chip into the immobilizer. The car has to recognize that chip before it will allow the engine to start. That whole sequence ran without a hitch.

By the time she came back out with her coffee, I had already tested the new key three times in the ignition and confirmed it started clean each time. She tried it herself, smiled, and said she wished she had done it six months ago.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait of several days just to get an appointment. She paid a fraction of that and never had to leave Oxnard.

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys for the 2020 Jetta?▼

We use OEM-spec blanks that match the factory blade profile and carry the correct transponder chip for this generation of Jetta. On this platform, the chip has to communicate properly with the immobilizer or the car simply won't start, no matter how well the blade is cut.
