Lemonwood on a Wednesday afternoon. A woman called from her driveway off Wooley Road saying her 2005 Jetta key had stopped locking the car. She could still drive it, no problem starting, but the remote did nothing. She'd already swapped the CR2032 twice because someone on a forum told her to try a different battery brand.
I pulled up and popped the flip key housing open on her trunk lid. The battery contacts were slightly oxidized, which happens on these when the fob has been riding in a pocket for a few years next to loose change. Cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh CR2032 correctly, snapped it back. Still dead on the remote side.
At that point it was a signal issue, not a battery issue. The remote needed to be resynchronized to the receiver. I connected to the OBD port, ran the adaptation through VW-capable diagnostic equipment, and the fob came back online. Locked, unlocked, and all four buttons responding.
She asked if she needed a whole new key. She didn't. The flip blade was fine, the transponder was fine, the housing was intact. Just a resync after the signal had drifted out of range. Took about twenty-five minutes from the time I parked.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a full replacement with a multi-day wait. That was never necessary. The key she already had was the one she drove away with.
