Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Volkswagen vehicles?

Years, with normal care. The transponder and remote electronics inside are durable. What wears out on these flip keys is mechanical, not electronic: the pivot pin loosens, the plastic shell cracks near the keyring loop, and the blade can develop slop if the pin isn't seated right. None of that kills the electronics.

If the shell gets beat up, the internals can usually be transferred to a fresh housing without any reprogramming, as long as the circuit board and transponder are intact. Swap the CR2032 every couple of years before it gets low enough to cause intermittent remote issues, and the key should outlast the car.

What if my new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call me. Every key I make is covered under warranty. If it loses remote function, stops starting the car, or develops any issue under normal use, I come back out and fix it or replace it.

The 2014 Jetta's key system is well-understood at this point, and a properly programmed key with a verified blank does not just drop pairing on its own. When I see stories on VW forums about keys failing shortly after a locksmith visit, it almost always traces back to the wrong blank, the wrong tool, or a shop that didn't confirm all functions before leaving. I test ignition start, lock, unlock, and every button before I close the job. That's not a bonus step - it's the job.

Probably not. On the flip key in this generation Jetta, the transponder that handles starting and the remote circuit that handles lock and unlock are separate functions inside the same fob. If the car starts normally, the transponder side is fine.

Dead or weak CR2032 is the first thing to check. Beyond that, corroded battery contacts are a common culprit - the positive contact tab can get a thin oxidation layer that interrupts current even when the battery reads okay. Pop the fob, look at the contact, clean it if needed, and reseat a fresh battery. A lot of Jetta owners on the forums went through unnecessary key replacements before someone told them to check the contact tab.

If cleaning the contacts and a new battery don't bring the remote back, then the remote circuit board itself may have a failed connection, and at that point a replacement fob is the right call.

I bought a replacement flip key fob online. Can you just program it for my 2014 Jetta?

Sometimes yes, sometimes it becomes a problem. Bring it and I'll take a look before committing to the job.

The issue with fobs sourced online for this generation Jetta is consistency. Some blanks are fine. Others arrive with the wrong transponder type already seated inside, or electronics that technically respond to the programmer but won't hold pairing. I've seen both. If the blank checks out on inspection, I can program it. If it doesn't, I can supply a verified one and we go from there. Either way, you're not stuck.
