Near the Oxnard Transit Center, a guy had just landed after a late flight and walked out to his 2009 Volkswagen Jetta in the economy lot. Dead fob. The car sat there ignoring every button press like it didn't know him.
He had never pulled the emergency blade out of the flip key housing before. Didn't even know it was in there. He's a documentary filmmaker with a shoot starting in four hours across town, so he called the VW dealer first. Earliest opening was Thursday. It was Tuesday.
I got out there in under an hour. Showed him the small release tab on the back of the NBG92596263 fob, slid the HU66 blade out, and popped the driver door manually. Inside, the dash lit up fine once I held the fob right against the steering column, which told me the ID48 CAN transponder chip was still paired to the immobilizer. The problem was just the CR2032 being completely flat, so the remote signal and the passive proximity wake-up were both gone.
Swapped the battery, then connected my IM608 through OBD to clear the communication fault code stored in the comfort module (address 46). Tested all four buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Everything responded clean.
I tossed a spare CR2032 in his camera bag so he'd have one next time. He made his shoot. The whole thing took maybe 25 minutes, and it cost him a fraction of what the dealer plus a tow truck would have run.
