Three roommates in College Park, Oxnard, sharing one 2001 Jetta and two keys between them. That math never works. They were constantly texting each other about who had which key, and it was turning into a daily headache.
The dealer wanted the car brought in and quoted a wait that would have pulled the Jetta out of rotation for most of a day. With three people depending on the same car for errands and commuting, that was not going to happen.
I met them at the house driveway late one afternoon. The Jetta runs Immo3 with the immobilizer module built into the cluster, so before adding anything I used my ACDP to pull a backup of the cluster data. VW Immo3 systems store key slot info on the instrument cluster's 93C86 EEPROM, and if something writes wrong during programming you want that backup or you are dealing with a no-start. Their key was the NBG8137T flip remote with the Megamos ID48 chip inside.
I programmed the third key through OBD, synced the remote, cut the blade on site, then tested all three keys back to back. Start, remote lock, remote unlock, trunk release, panic. Every function, every key.
One of them just stood there holding the new key like they were not sure it was real. The group text about who has the key apparently stopped that same night.
