2013 Volkswagen Jetta
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

Ask for the license number, a firm price for your specific vehicle, and the company name before anyone rolls a truck. Scam operations quote a low number over the phone and double it once they're in your driveway. There are threads on VW forums where owners describe paying far more than quoted for keys that barely functioned, with buttons that only responded intermittently and blades that weren't cut right.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. The blade gets cut to your vehicle, and the transponder gets enrolled to the immobilizer so the car starts. The remote receiver gets the fob registered so lock, unlock, and the other buttons all respond. We test everything before we leave, including starting the car multiple times and walking the remote range. VW locksmiths on forums are consistent about one thing: incomplete programming attempts on these cars can cause problems that are harder to undo than the original job.

Q: I bought a replacement flip key fob online. Can you just program it for me?

Sometimes, but it depends on what you bought. The fob has to be the correct one for a 2013 Jetta, which means the right frequency, the right number of buttons, and a compatible transponder chip inside the head. A lot of the cheap blanks sold online look identical on the outside but have mismatched internals that won't enroll properly. If you bring it and it's compatible, we can program it.

Q: My Jetta starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. Start with the CR2032. A weak battery is the most common reason remote functions drop out while the car still starts, because the transponder draws far less power than the radio transmitter in the fob. Swap the battery, make sure it's seated flat against the contacts, and retest all four buttons. If one or two buttons work and others don't, the contacts under the rubber pad on that button may be worn.

2013 Volkswagen Jetta Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Mar Vista, a woman flagged me down in the parking lot of her office building before I even had a chance to park behind her Jetta. She had one key left, the original flip key she'd had since she bought the car, and the blade hinge was getting loose. She wasn't locked out yet, but she'd seen what happens when you wait until you are.

She wanted a second key made on the spot so she'd never have to find out firsthand.

I pulled the VIN, confirmed the key type, and got to work. The blade was decoded from the door lock, cut on my machine, and fitted into the new flip key housing. Then came the part that takes the right equipment: connecting to the OBD port, running security access, pulling the authorization the immobilizer needs, and enrolling the new key alongside her existing one. That last part matters. When you're not in an all-keys-lost situation, you keep the original working. Both keys got tested, both started the car, every button on the four-button fob was verified, and I walked the distance across the lot to check remote range.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait of several days just to get an appointment. She was done in under 40 minutes, standing in the same parking lot where she'd started her morning.

Volkswagen Jetta Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Volkswagen vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, the state agency that regulates locksmiths. We carry full liability insurance. On a 2013 Jetta, programming the transponder through the vehicle's immobilizer requires both the right software and verified credentials to access VW security data. You want someone who has cleared that process before they ever plug into your car.
