Out in Ormond Beach, Oxnard, a guy called me from an airport economy lot after landing on a red-eye. His 2008 Honda Ridgeline was sitting right where he left it, but the key fob was completely dead. Doors locked. No remote response. And his emergency blade was zipped inside a bag in the trunk bed, which also wouldn't pop without the remote.
He had already called the dealer. Earliest opening was Thursday. This was Tuesday morning. A tow company wanted to haul it to the dealership, and he was doing the math on two days without his truck plus the tow plus whatever the dealer would charge for a battery swap he could probably do himself.
I got to the lot in about 45 minutes. Picked the door, sat down in the driver seat, and plugged my Autel IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash. The immobilizer module on the Ridgeline (Honda calls it the IMOES, immobilizer on the engine computer, part of the 38770-RJE PCM assembly) confirmed both his keys were still registered. No lost-key situation. No reprogramming needed.
Popped the back off his OUCG8D-380H-A remote head key, pulled the dead CR1616, dropped in a fresh one. All three buttons came back. Lock, unlock, trunk. I cleared the one stored DTC and tested the transponder start just to be thorough.
He drove home that same morning. Skipped the tow, skipped the Thursday appointment, saved a good chunk doing it all at the curb.
