Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Honda vehicles?

For the 2014 Ridgeline I stock keys that match the factory FCC ID and the correct blade profile for that integrated remote head key design. On these Hondas, the quality of the key blank matters more than people think because the fob and the ignition blade are the same unit. A cheap aftermarket shell on this style of key can develop blade wobble or contact problems faster than a standalone fob would.

Owners on Honda forums have posted about knockoff remote head keys that lost remote range within months or had the blade collar crack at the collar where it meets the housing. Not worth the tradeoff. I carry keys I've tested on these trucks and I know what holds up.

How long will a replacement key last on the Ridgeline?

Years, with normal use and a fresh battery every couple of years. The transponder inside the remote head key is well protected by the housing and rarely fails on its own. What actually wears out on these is the rubber around the buttons and the blade collar where it meets the housing body, especially if the key lives on a heavy keychain. If the shell wears through, the internal electronics can usually be transferred to a new housing without going back through the programming process.

Battery is the other maintenance item. CR1616 cells in a remote head key tend to run down a little faster than in a standalone fob because the unit is larger and the contacts work harder. If your remote range starts shrinking before anything else changes, that's your first signal to swap the cell.

What if the replacement key stops working after a few weeks?

One thing worth knowing: dealers have been known to flag key-related issues as outside coverage if a third-party tool or non-OEM key was involved in prior service. I don't operate with those kinds of carve-outs. If a key I made stops starting the truck or loses remote function under normal conditions, that's on me to fix.

Question 4

My Ridgeline starts fine but the remote won't lock or unlock the doors anymore. Is the fob broken?

Not necessarily. On the first-gen Ridgeline, remote function and ignition function run through different parts of the system. If the truck starts and runs normally, the transponder side is working. If only the remote buttons are dead, the issue is almost always the battery or a lost pairing between the fob and the body control module.

CR1616 cells in this style of key can drop below functional voltage for the remote circuits while still having enough power to read as a transponder. The truck starts, the remote does nothing. Owners on Ridgeline forums have gone weeks thinking they had a major fob failure before finding out it was just a battery that was low but not fully dead.

Try the fresh CR1616 first. If that doesn't bring the remote back, the fob may need to be re-registered. That's a quick job and doesn't require replacing anything.

Question 5

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself?

There is an onboard relearn sequence available on first-gen Ridgelines for adding a remote head key if at least one working key is already present. It involves a timed sequence through the driver door lock and the ignition, and it does work when the conditions are right.

The catch is that it only registers the remote functions, not the transponder. If the replacement key came unprogrammed on both sides, the remote side might pair through the sequence but the truck still won't start. The transponder side needs a programmer. Most people don't realize those are two separate steps until the truck won't fire after they finished the door-lock sequence and figured they were done.

If you bought a key online and want to know where you stand before calling me, check whether the remote buttons respond after the sequence. If yes on remote but no start, you're halfway there and I can finish it.
