Cemetery Memorial Park in Ventura gets quiet after dark. That's where I met a guy with a dead 2021 Ridgeline smart key last Tuesday around 8 PM.
He'd already tried the CR2032 swap himself. Still got "No Key Detected" on the dash. The backup start procedure worked once, then nothing. He was ready to flatbed it to the dealer.
I checked his fob first. KR5V2X, part number ending in A21. The battery contacts looked clean but one tab had lost its spring tension. Common on these when people jam batteries in wrong. I bent the tab back into position, seated a fresh CR2032 properly, then ran a key relearn through the OBD port.
The Ridgeline beeped twice. Good sign. Remote lock worked. Remote start fired right up. The push button responded without holding the fob against it.
"That's it?" he asked.
Pretty much. The VVDI tool confirmed the key was transmitting at full strength again. No corruption in the BCM like TSB 18-069 warns about when keys go partially dead. Just a mechanical issue disguised as an electronic failure.
He mentioned the dealer quote was three digits and a two-day wait. This took 25 minutes in his own driveway.
