Guy was in the Centerpoint Mall parking lot in Oxnard, sitting in his 2015 Ridgeline, and the engine would not turn over. He had one key. It turned the ignition, the dash lit up, but the green immobilizer light blinked and the starter just sat there. He had jumped the truck earlier that week because he left the headlights on overnight, and the transponder lost sync after that.
He was diabetic. His insulin was at home, and the whole reason he was out was a pharmacy run. He called the dealer. Earliest appointment was the next afternoon. Then he called me. I was about 15 minutes out.
I got there, opened it up, and plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash. His remote head key, the OUCG8D-380H-A with the 46 chip, was physically fine. The CR1616 inside the remote portion was dead, but the real problem was the transponder had dropped its handshake with the immobilizer after that jump start. I replaced the CR1616, ran the transponder relearn through OBD, and tested every function: remote lock, unlock, panic, and engine start.
Then I walked him through the backup procedure for his Ridgeline, how to hold the key right against the ignition ring if the transponder ever acts weak again.
From his phone call to his engine running, about 40 minutes. He drove straight to the pharmacy. Sometimes the difference between a locksmith and a dealer is not convenience. It is getting the truck started before it turns into a health problem.
