2014 Infiniti QX80
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the programming take once you're at my car?

For a standard add-a-key on the 2014 QX80, the programming portion through the OBD port runs roughly 10 to 20 minutes. Full visit, including cutting the emergency blade and testing every fob function, is usually 30 to 45 minutes. All-keys-lost is a longer job. Security PIN retrieval has to happen before the system will accept any new key, and that process adds time. Budget 60 to 90 minutes for an all-keys-lost visit on this vehicle.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

Almost always, yes. The dealer typically needs to order a VIN-matched fob, which takes days, then you schedule programming as a separate visit. Forum threads from QX80 and platform-sibling owners regularly mention waits of a week or more from first call to working key, and that's without any inventory delays. We show up with the key already in hand. One visit, one bill, done on-site. For a standard add-a-key that's 30 to 45 minutes.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my QX80. Can I just program it myself?

No. The 2014 QX80 Intelligent Key system does not have a DIY self-programming sequence. There is no button combination, no ignition cycling trick, nothing like that. Registering a new fob to this vehicle requires professional diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. If you already bought the fob online, that's fine, bring it along, but it still needs to be professionally paired to your specific car. The fob itself is just hardware until the vehicle's security system recognizes it.

Q: One door handle stopped triggering touch unlock but the fob still starts the car fine. What's going on?

If the push-button start still works and other handles respond, the fob is almost certainly not the problem. Touch unlock on these systems runs through sensors in each individual door handle, and those sensors can fail or lose responsiveness on their own, independent of the key. Wipe the handle area down and retest. If it stays isolated to one door, you're looking at that door's handle sensor or its wiring, not the fob and not a programming issue.

2014 Infiniti QX80 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Lynn Ranch sits up in the hills east of Thousand Oaks, and the driveways up there are long. When someone calls me from that neighborhood at 9 in the evening, I know two things: they're not walking anywhere, and the dealer isn't answering the phone.

The call came from an occupational therapist who had just finished a late session at an outpatient clinic. She walked to her car in the employee lot and got nothing. Push-button start didn't respond. The fob wasn't just weak, it had stopped communicating entirely. She'd already tried holding it close to the start button, tried the backup key slot trick, nothing. The dealer's earliest appointment was Thursday. It was Monday.

I was at her car before 10 pm. Ran the Infiniti Intelligent Key learning procedure through the OBD port with my Smart Pro, registered the new fob to her vehicle, and then walked every function before I called it done: door handles, lock, unlock, start, each button. She sat in the passenger seat while I went through the checklist. When it all came back, she just exhaled.

She drove home that night. Didn't leave her QX80 in a dark lot for three days. Didn't call a ride or rearrange her Tuesday patients. The dealer comparison didn't even come up until she was already pulling out of the lot.

Infiniti QX80 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need an Infiniti key replaced after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call us directly. Infiniti's dealer service departments run standard business hours, and evenings and Sundays are a dead zone. Infiniti Roadside Assistance can help with a lockout or tow, but actual key programming waits until the dealer opens and a blank is either in stock or ordered. For QX80 owners in Thousand Oaks and the Lynn Ranch area, that can mean your vehicle sits until someone's available, sometimes days later depending on inventory.
