Got the call from Oxnard Transit Center parking lot. Guy's 2025 QX80 wouldn't recognize his smart key. "I-Key System Error" on the dash, doors locked, briefcase inside.
He'd already tried the usual: held the fob against the start button, changed the battery himself. Nothing. The dealer wanted him to tow it in, wait three days minimum.
I pulled up with my Autel IM608 ready. First thing I checked was the fob itself. The KRSTXPZ3 board had visible corrosion near the battery contacts. California coastal air does that sometimes. The NCF29A1M chip was fine, but the circuit traces were compromised.
Built him a new 285E3-7JA8B fob right there in the parking lot. The IM608 read the security data through OBD2, programmed the new fob's AES128 encryption, then I cut the emergency blade on my Xhorse Condor. Whole process took 35 minutes including testing all five buttons.
He made his meeting. Saved a chunk compared to dealer pricing and the three-day wait they quoted him.
