I got a call from a daycare worker over in Hueneme Beach. It was early, she was already running behind, and her 2008 Jeep Compass was just sitting there in the parking lot doing nothing. I popped the fob open right there on the hood. The CR2032 looked fine at first, but the positive clip had a slight outward bow, just enough to lose contact under vibration. Swapped the battery and reset the clip tension. The locks cycled. Fob was alive.
But the car still would not start. The immobilizer was not seeing the key as authorized, which told me the circuit board inside the fob had been browning out long enough that the vehicle had stopped trusting it. New remote head key, blade cut to her lock, programmed through the OBD port while she called the daycare to say she was five minutes out.
She walked in late but not absent. And she paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted her when she called them first and they said to have it towed in.
