A baseball coach near the little league fields in the Old Town Goleta area had a fair question before I touched anything. What happens if this key quits working in two weeks? His 2010 Compass was the family vehicle and he could not afford to be stuck with kids and gear loaded in the back.

I decoded his door cylinder with my Y159 Lishi, cut a fresh blade on site, and programmed the transponder through OBD-II by pulling the SKIM PIN. His remote head key, OHT692427AA, is a 4-button unit: lock, unlock, panic, and hatch. I tested ignition start, tested each remote button, checked range from about 30 feet out. Then I tested it all again five minutes later because intermittent problems sometimes only show up after the key sits idle for a bit.
He asked what the dealer would have charged. I just told him it would have been a lot more, plus a tow, plus waiting for a parts order. He nodded like he already knew.
