The fairgrounds parking lot in Ventura gets hot, and that's where this Compass owner found herself stuck with a "Key Not Detected" message on the dash.
She'd already tried the basics: new CR2032, cleaned the contacts, even did the whole unplug-the-battery reset she read about online. Nothing. The M3N-40821302 fob would lock and unlock fine, but push-to-start just cycled through error messages. She was about to call AAA when she found me instead.
I pulled up next to her Compass and grabbed my Autel IM608. These 2023 models need the RF Hub access, not just OBD. The hub sits behind the driver side kick panel, connector C3. Once I had direct access, the system showed stored code B1A87-13 for lost key communication. Common on these when the NCF29A1M chip starts failing.
Programming the replacement fob took about 15 minutes through the secured gateway. Had to run the key learn sequence twice because these Compass models need all existing keys present or they won't complete the process. She only had the one dead key, so I did the all-keys-lost reset first, then added the new one.
She kept asking if it would happen again. I showed her how to test signal strength by checking if the door handles work from 10 feet away. When that distance starts shrinking, time for a new battery. Way cheaper than another service call.
