1995 Mazda Miata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my 1995 Miata to the dealer if I have no keys?

No. A mobile locksmith can handle this in your driveway, your parking lot, wherever the car is. The 1995 Miata doesn't require any dealer-only software or security credentials to get a new key made. Dealers will often tell you to tow it in because that's how their service department works, not because the job actually requires it. I come to you, decode the lock, cut the key on-site, and that's the whole job.

Q: How long does it take to get a replacement key made for a 1995 Miata?

Usually 15 to 20 minutes on-site, sometimes faster if the lock cylinder decodes cleanly. There's no programming countdown, no waiting on a security timer. I decode the cut, run it on my cutter, and test it in both the door and ignition before I leave. The only thing that slows it down is a damaged lock cylinder, which occasionally needs more careful work to read accurately. Either way, it's a short job compared to anything involving modern security systems.

Q: My 1995 Miata key turns hard in the ignition and sometimes doesn't come out. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Could be both, but usually starts with the key. On a 30-year-old Miata, the key blade wears down over time, and the ignition wafers wear with it. A worn key can bind against wafers that have shifted position. Try your spare if you have one. If the spare turns smoothly, your daily key is worn out and needs replacing. If both keys bind, the issue is inside the cylinder itself.

Q: Can I get a copy made at a hardware store, or do I need a locksmith for the 1995 Miata?

A hardware store can duplicate the key if you have a working original in decent shape. The catch is quality. Hardware store copies cut from a worn original inherit every flaw in that blade, and on a car this age, the locks have tight tolerances from years of wear patterns. A locksmith cutting from the decoded lock data gets the correct specification, not a copy of a copy. If your only key is already worn, go the locksmith route.

1995 Mazda Miata Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call out to Moorpark Home Acres on a Saturday morning. Guy was standing next to his 1995 Miata in the driveway, holding half a key. The blade had snapped off in the door lock, and the broken end was still sitting inside the cylinder. He'd already tried fishing it out with a magnet and a paperclip. Neither worked, and he'd made it worse.

I pulled the fragment out with the right extractors, then decoded the lock cylinder while I had it accessible. Cut a fresh key to match, tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. Turned over on the first try.

The thing he kept saying was that he figured this would be a whole production. He'd looked up Miata key replacement online and found threads mixing up his generation with newer ones that have transponders and immobilizers. He thought he needed programming equipment, a dealer visit, the works. He was relieved when I told him it was just a key cut. Done in his driveway, no tow, for a fraction of what he'd mentally budgeted.

Mazda Miata Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 1995 Miata. Can you still make one?▼

Yes, and it's one of the simpler all-keys-lost situations I deal with. The 1995 Miata takes a mechanical key, so there's no immobilizer to reset and no programming sequence to run. I decode the lock cylinder directly, cut a key to that code, and you're back on the road. The whole job happens on-site wherever the car is sitting. No tow required.
