1999 Mazda Miata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: I lost my key and I am worried someone might have found it. Can you make sure the old key no longer works?

Honest answer for a 1999 Miata: the security here is entirely in the physical lock. There is no electronic registry of authorized keys to rewrite. If someone finds your key and it is cut to your car, it will work. The real solution is a lock rekey. A locksmith can rekey the ignition cylinder and door locks to a new key cut, so the lost key becomes useless.

Q: Is there a hidden emergency blade inside the fob for a 1999 Mazda Miata?

No fob on this one. The 1999 Miata uses a plain metal key for everything: the door, the ignition, the trunk. There is no smart key, no remote, no hidden blade inside a plastic housing. Your key is the key. Keep a spare somewhere accessible, because this is the kind of car where losing your only key means calling a locksmith rather than just sliding out an emergency blade.

Q: My 1999 Miata ignition feels stiff and sometimes the key barely turns. Do I need a new ignition?

Not necessarily. After 25 years, the wafer tumblers inside the ignition cylinder wear unevenly, and the key itself wears down right along with them. What happens is the worn key and the worn cylinder start working against each other instead of together. A fresh key cut from the original code, rather than copied from a worn daily key, can make a real difference.

Q: Can I get a key made without the original, or do I need to bring the car to a shop?

You do not need the original key, and you do not need to tow the car anywhere. I can decode the door lock cylinder directly to get the key code, then cut a replacement on site. Works the same whether you have a worn spare, a broken key, or nothing at all. For a 1999 Miata in Mountain Meadows, this is a driveway job start to finish.

1999 Mazda Miata Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Mountain Meadows, Moorpark, who had locked his only key inside his 1999 Miata. Classic. The top was up, windows were up, and he was standing in his driveway with nowhere to be except stuck.

He had already called a dealership. They told him to tow it in and they would look at availability. He said the word "availability" like it had personally offended him.

I was in the area and pulled up in about twenty minutes. Picked the door, got him back in, and then we talked for a second. He only had the one key. That is a bad spot to be in with a 25-year-old car, because worn locks and a single key are a countdown, not a maybe.

I decoded the lock with my tool, pulled the key code from it, and cut him a spare on the spot. Tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition, both worked clean.

He asked what it would have cost at the dealer. Honestly, the tow alone would have been a chunk, and then shop time on top of that. He paid a fraction of what that route would have looked like, and he walked away with two working keys instead of one.

The Miata was in good shape, by the way. Low miles, original paint. He mentioned he only drives it on weekends. Some people actually do that.
