Got a call from a woman near the Oxnard Performing Arts Center who said her 2001 Miata key snapped off in the ignition. She'd been wiggling it for weeks because it was getting stiff, and it finally gave up right there in the parking area.
The broken piece was still sitting in the cylinder. I could see the tip of it recessed just past the first wafer. Extracted it with a broken key extractor, checked the wafers, and they were fine.
