2004 Mazda Miata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I have to tow my 2004 Miata to the dealer if I have no keys?

Not a chance. Dealers default to tow-it-in because that's how their service lane works, but a mobile locksmith can handle this right in your driveway or parking spot. On a mechanical key car like the 2004 Miata, there's no module reset, no programming countdown, no reason to move the vehicle at all. We decode the lock on site and cut the key. The dealer charges a good chunk more and needs the car in their bay to do it.

Q: How long does it take to make a replacement key for a 2004 Miata?

Usually 15 to 20 minutes once we're on site. Decoding the lock is quick on this generation, cutting the blade takes a couple of minutes, and then we test it in the door and the ignition to confirm it's right before we pack up. It's a short job. At a dealer, the same work gets stretched into a half-day because of check-in, scheduling, and shop workflow that turns a 20-minute task into a wait.

Q: My 2004 Miata key is worn down and getting sticky in the ignition. Should I replace it before it breaks completely?

Yes, and sooner is better. The ignition cylinder on the NB-generation Miata is not especially forgiving of a badly worn key. A key that's been on a heavy keychain for years, or has been copied a few times without going back to the original, can get sloppy enough that it starts sticking or needing a jiggle to turn. Push that far enough and you risk the key binding or snapping in the cylinder.

Q: Can any locksmith cut a key for a 2004 Miata, or do I need a Mazda dealer?

Any competent automotive locksmith with the right cutting equipment can handle it. This isn't a job that requires dealer-only software or special credentials. It's a mechanical key. The dealer has no exclusive access here. What matters is that whoever you call knows how to decode a lock or pull a key code correctly, because a key cut even slightly off will wear the cylinder faster or feel wrong in the ignition.

2004 Mazda Miata Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a teaching assistant who lived near Rose Park in Oxnard. She'd already had a rough day before she even picked up the phone.

She'd lost her only key to her 2004 Miata somewhere between her apartment and campus, and she'd already called someone off a Google ad. That locksmith showed up, poked around, quoted her a number that kept climbing, and eventually left her with a key that barely worked and a charge that made no sense for the job. She wasn't sure what she'd actually paid for.

She found me through Google Guaranteed and asked straight off whether I was licensed. I gave her my BSIS license number right on the call. She pulled it up on the state site while we were still talking. That settled it.

When I got to her place, the fix was exactly what it should have been: decode the lock, cut a new blade to match the vehicle, confirm it turns cleanly in both the door and the ignition. No drama, no mystery fees. The Miata started first try. She sat in the driver's seat for a second like she was waiting for a catch.

There wasn't one. That's the whole job on a car like this, and it should feel that simple.

Mazda Miata Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost my only key to my 2004 Miata. Can you make a new one on the spot?▼

Yes, and it's one of the cleaner all-keys-lost situations we deal with. The 2004 Miata takes a mechanical key, so the work is decoding the lock or referencing the key code and cutting a new blade to match. We do that on site, right where the car is parked. No tow, no appointment, no waiting on a parts order. If you're in the Rose Park area or anywhere around Oxnard, we come to you.
