A public defender near the Oxnard Transit Center called me late one evening. She had been working late at the courthouse and walked out to the parking structure to find her 2003 Miata's key wouldn't turn the ignition. She told me she had looked up my BSIS license number, LCO 6792, before she ever dialed. Works late, walks alone to a dark deck. She wasn't handing her car to someone she couldn't verify.
I got there and checked the key first. The blade was worn down on the bitting, flat spots where the peaks used to be. The wafer tumblers in the NB2 ignition cylinder are sensitive to that. A worn key starts binding, then one night it just stops turning altogether.
Cut a fresh key on site using my code cutter and the factory key code pulled through my NASTF access. No transponder to worry about on these, just a clean mechanical cut to the original depths. Slid the new key in, turned smooth, engine fired right up.
She asked about a spare. I cut a second one while I was there. She kept the old worn key as a backup for the doors.
The dealer she had called earlier that week quoted a wait of several days and a tow to the service bay. She got two keys, on site, at a fraction of what they wanted, and drove home the same night.
