Got a call from a guy near Historic Plaza Park in Oxnard around 7pm on a weekday. His 2005 Miata was sitting in the alley behind his place with one key that looked like it had been through a garbage disposal. The blade was worn so thin it barely grabbed the wafers anymore. He could wiggle the ignition on if he held it just right, but lately it stopped turning at all.
He had already called the Mazda dealer. They told him the car would need to come in, they would need to order the key, and he should plan on leaving it for a couple days. He didn't have a second car.
I showed up with an NB-cut blank and my Lishi MAZ24 pick and decoder. Read the wafers right off the driver door cylinder, which was in better shape than the ignition. Cut a fresh key on site. The 4D63 transponder cloned from his old key in about two minutes using the T-Code.
The part that got him was how fast it was. He kept turning the ignition on and off, like he was testing it. Then he just sat in the driver seat with the top down for a minute. I think he missed driving the thing.
One new key, cut and programmed in his alley, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted with none of the wait.
