Got a call from a guy over near Centennial Plaza in Oxnard. His 2000 Miata was sitting in the parking lot with the top down and no way to start it. He had snapped the key right at the shoulder trying to force the ignition, which is common on these NB Miatas because the wafer tumblers in the ignition cylinder wear down and start binding.
When I pulled up, the broken tip was still jammed in the cylinder. I could see about two millimeters of brass sticking out. Not enough to grab with fingers, but plenty for extraction tools. Slid a broken key extractor in along the top of the keyway, hooked the first cut, and walked it out clean. No cylinder damage.
He had his key code on a tag from the original purchase, which made this fast. I cut a fresh blank on my mobile machine, tested the ignition, both doors, the trunk, and the glove box. All one code on these cars, so one key does everything.
He asked me what the dealer quoted him. He said they told him they would need the car towed in and it would take two days because they had to order the cylinder. He did not need a new cylinder. He needed the broken piece out and a new key cut. Whole thing took about twenty minutes in the parking lot.
