2000 Mazda Miata
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 2000 Mazda Miata actually use?

It's a metal key, full stop. No fob, no remote buttons, no battery to replace. The key blade is cut to your specific vehicle and that's what operates the ignition and the door locks. There's no remote entry on the base system for this generation. If you bought this car and only got one key, now is a good time to get a spare cut.

Q: My 2000 Miata won't start and I'm not getting any warning. Could it be the key?

On a mechanical key car like this one, the key either turns the ignition or it doesn't. There's no key-not-detected message to look for. If the key turns freely but the car won't start, that's pointing toward a fuel, electrical, or ignition switch issue, not the key blade itself. If the key is hard to turn, stiff, or catches in the cylinder, that's a worn cylinder or a worn key.

Q: Can you make a spare key if I've lost the original and have no key at all?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 2000 Miata is actually one of the cleaner scenarios I deal with. Because this is a mechanical key, the job comes down to decoding the lock. I can decode from the door lock cylinder, pull the correct cut, and produce a working key from scratch without the original. No factory data login, no security reset, no countdown timer.

Q: The key turns but then the ignition feels gritty or catches. Is that a key problem or a cylinder problem?

Both are possible and they can cause each other. On a Miata this age, the ignition wafer tumblers wear down over time. A worn key can accelerate that wear, and a worn cylinder can chew up an otherwise decent key. The gritty feeling is usually debris in the cylinder or a tumbler that's starting to bind. Start by trying the key in the door lock.

2000 Mazda Miata Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy out in South Winds, Oxnard. He'd found me on YouTube before he ever had a problem, watched a key job on a different Mazda, and saved the number. Smart move, as it turned out.

He'd had the same key since he bought the car and at some point it just snapped. Not at the tip, not in the ignition, just at the shoulder where the blade meets the bow. Probably metal fatigue from two decades of key rings pulling on it at a slight angle. He still had both pieces, which helped.

I came out to him. No shop, no tow, no waiting. I decoded the blade from the worn piece he had, confirmed the cut against the door lock, and cut a fresh key on site. Tried it in the door, tried it in the ignition, and let him do a couple of turns himself so he knew it was right.

He mentioned he'd called the dealer first just to see. They wanted to schedule him two days out and the quote was more than he expected for a metal key. He paid a fraction of that and had a working key in his hand the same morning he called.

My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes. Broken key extraction on these is a standard call. The NB Miata ignition cylinder sits in a pretty accessible spot, and with the right extraction tools the broken piece comes out without pulling or damaging the cylinder. Once it's clear, I cut a new key to match on site. One thing worth knowing: a 24-year-old Miata ignition can be worn enough that the new key feels slightly loose or stiff at first.
