Over by Topa Topa Brewing Company in Oxnard, a 2011 Leaf owner flagged me down about an aftermarket versus OEM question. He wanted a spare he could trust as his daily key, not just something to stash in a drawer. Fair question.

I pulled the blank out of my kit. Same NSN14 blade profile, same PCF7952 transponder chip the NATS module expects, same 3-button layout matching FCC ID CWTWB1U808. The aftermarket housing snaps together the same way, same weight in hand, same button feel. The difference is no Nissan logo on the back and a good chunk less in your pocket.
I cut the blade to his lock data, registered the fob through the OBD port, and ran the full check. Lock, unlock, panic button, proximity detection at each door handle, push-button start. Everything responded clean. He held both keys, the old OEM and the new one, flipping them back and forth like he was looking for a tell.
There is no tell. Where aftermarket goes wrong is when someone sources the cheapest blank they can find. I test every batch before it goes in the van. His spare works the same as his original, and he spent a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
