A night-shift janitor working the dollar store lot over in the Midtown neighborhood in Ventura called me about his 2013 Leaf. Another locksmith had made him a key about eight days earlier. It started the car fine at first, then started throwing "No Key Detected" on the dash by the end of his shift. Random. Sometimes mornings too. He thought his Leaf had an electrical gremlin.
It didn't. The key had a problem.
I pulled his fob apart on the hood and read the transponder with my programmer. The other tech had loaded a close-but-wrong chip profile. On the NATS6 system, a mismatched chip can pass the initial registration handshake but fail the deeper rolling-code validation the BCM runs over multiple drive cycles. It looks like it works until it doesn't.
His CR2032 was also half dead, which made detection range drop to almost nothing, so the problem looked electrical and intermittent when it was really two things stacked on top of each other.
I programmed a new fob with the correct PCF7952 profile matched to part number 285E3-3SG0D, swapped in a fresh CR2032, and walked all five buttons including the charge port release. Then I tested push-to-start from every seat position.
He stood there watching the dash the whole time, waiting for it to say "No Key Detected" again. It never did. That key has been solid for months. The difference between a key that works and one that works for a week is the chip inside it.
