I got a call from a guy in Casitas Springs, Ventura, who was already frustrated before I pulled up. He'd had a key made by someone else for his 2013 Leaf about a week and a half earlier, and it was giving him a key-not-detected warning on the dash. Not every time. That was the maddening part. It started fine in the morning, then by his evening shift the push-to-start would sit there blinking at him like it had never seen the fob before.
He thought the car had developed an electrical problem. He'd already looked up EV repair shops, was mentally pricing out a tow. I told him to hold off.
I popped the fob and checked the CR2032 first, which was fine. The issue was in how the key had been paired. The previous job had been done with a tool that didn't fully complete the write cycle for the Leaf's security system. It passed a basic handshake, which is why it worked at all, but the deeper verification that happens over multiple start cycles was catching it. The car was essentially flagging the key as unrecognized after warming up to it.
I reprogrammed the fob correctly, verified the key-not-detected warning was gone, walked through lock, unlock, and the remaining buttons, then had him do a cold start and a second start back to back while I watched. Clean both times.
He asked me what the dealer would have done. Probably ordered a new fob, scheduled him out a few days, and charged him accordingly. He didn't need a new fob. He needed the right work done on the one he had.
