2019 Nissan Leaf
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What battery does the 2019 Nissan Leaf key fob take?

CR2032. It's a common size, easy to find. When you replace it, don't just drop it in loose. Press it flat against both contact clips and make sure it doesn't rock. A slightly cocked battery will cause the same intermittent behavior as a dead one, and you'll think the swap didn't work.

Q: I found a replacement fob online that lists the factory FCC ID matching my 2019 Leaf. Can I just swap it in?

Matching the factory FCC ID on the fob means it's the right hardware, but that alone doesn't make it work. An unprogrammed fob won't communicate with the vehicle security system or allow push-button start. It needs to be registered to your specific car using diagnostic equipment. The factory FCC ID tells you the fob is compatible. Programming is what makes it functional.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2019 Leaf. Is an all-keys-lost situation something a mobile locksmith can actually handle?

Yes, and it's a job I do regularly. All-keys-lost on a push-button proximity vehicle like this requires connecting to the vehicle through the diagnostic port, clearing the existing key memory, and registering new fobs from scratch. It takes longer than adding a spare to a working system because of the reset sequence involved, but it's fully doable on-site. You don't need a tow to the dealer for this.

Q: My 2019 Leaf shows a key warning on the dash but the fob is working fine. What's actually going on?

A few things can cause this. Low fob battery is the most common. But Leaf owners also report interference from other key fobs or certain wireless devices sitting close to the fob. Try keeping the Leaf fob on its own, away from other key fobs in your pocket or bag, and retest. If the warning clears, interference was the issue.

2019 Nissan Leaf Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Juanamaria, a 2019 Leaf owner texted me after her fob stopped waking the car. She'd walk up, grab the door handle, nothing. She'd pull out the fob and press unlock manually and it would work, but only if she was right on top of the car.

She assumed it needed full reprogramming. The dealer had already told her to come in, and she was looking at a wait and a bill before she found me.

I got there, popped the fob, and the CR2032 inside looked original. Not corroded, but reading low. Swapped it out, reseated the contacts, and walked back to normal approach distance.

Handle woke the car from six feet out. Push-button start read the fob immediately. Ran through all four buttons, checked passive lock on exit, checked the handle sensor on both front doors. Everything behaved the way it should.

She didn't need a new fob, didn't need a dealer visit, didn't need her car towed anywhere. Done in the driveway in under twenty minutes, and she paid a fraction of what they wanted downtown.

Nissan Leaf Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 2019 Nissan Leaf smart key fob have?▼

Four buttons. Lock, unlock, and the other two functions depending on your trim and configuration. If you're ordering a replacement fob, make sure you're matching a four-button unit or you'll be registering the wrong key to the car.
