A swing shift electrician over in the Montalvo neighborhood in Ventura called me around 10:45 on a weeknight. His only smart key for the 2017 Leaf had stopped working completely. The car was sitting in his mobile home driveway, push-to-start, no responding fob. He had already looked up tow costs and was mentally rearranging his week around getting to work without a car.
I told him to stay put.
Got there just before 11:30. Connected my programmer to the OBD-II port under the dash and ran the Nissan Intelligent Key all-keys-lost procedure. On the 2017 Leaf, the immobilizer is NATS5 with a Hitag AES transponder on the BCM (body control module, board 284B2-4NF0A on these). The AKL process walks through the handshake, wipes old key registration data, and writes the new fob to the system.
His replacement was the CWTWB1U840, five-button proximity fob with the emergency insert blade inside. Programmed it, tested lock and unlock from outside, verified push-to-start, checked that the charge port door release button on the fob worked. The whole thing took maybe 25 minutes in his driveway.
He just stood there watching the dash light up like he expected it to argue with him.
