A guy in Midtown Ventura called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He drives a 2021 Leaf and had been dealing with a weird on-again, off-again situation where the car wouldn't recognize the fob when he walked up to the driver door. It would detect it fine at the passenger side. Sometimes it would just work again with no explanation. He'd already been to the dealer once. I popped it open and the CR2032 was seated but not making clean contact on one side. You could press it and feel it rock slightly. That tells me it was pried out at some point rather than popped properly.
I cleaned the contact points, pressed the battery flat and firm, and closed it back up. Then we walked the car together. Driver door touch unlock, check. Passenger door, check. All four buttons. Push-button start. Everything behaved.
He stood there for a second and said something like, "so that's it?" Yeah, that was it. The dealer was ready to sell him a whole new fob and the programming labor that goes with it. What he needed was ten minutes and someone who didn't jump straight to the expensive answer.
