Got a call from a woman in the Pierpont neighborhood in Ventura. She kept horses at a stable nearby and had actually watched one of my Nissan Intelligent Key videos on YouTube months before anything went wrong with her car. Saved my number then. Smart move.
Her 2012 Leaf started flashing "Key System Error" on the center display. Push the start button, nothing. She swapped the CR2032 herself, tried holding the fob against the button, still dead. Dealer told her to have it towed in. Quote was steep and the wait was over a week out.
I drove out to her. Popped open the CWTWB1U808 fob on the hood of the Leaf. The battery looked fine, contacts were clean. The issue was registration. The fob had lost its pairing with the BCM. It happens on these, especially when a battery dies fully and sits that way for a while.
I connected through the OBD port, pulled the NATS PIN from the BCM, erased the old key data, and re-registered her fob fresh. Then I programmed a spare so she would not be in this spot again. Tested all three buttons on both fobs, ran three clean start cycles, confirmed range from the stable gate with the car parked.
She stood there watching, same as she had on the YouTube video. Only this time it was her car. Same person from the videos, same tools, no dispatcher, no waiting room.
