1995 Pontiac Grand Prix
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is involved in replacing a metal key on a 1995 Grand Prix?

It's a cutting job, not a programming job. I decode the lock or pull the key code, cut a new blade to match, and test it in the ignition and door. There's no OBD port step, no chip enrollment, no security relearn. The whole process is mechanical start to finish. If you lost all your keys, same answer: decode the lock, cut the key, done.

Q: What if a key broke off inside the ignition on my 1995 Grand Prix?

That's an extraction job first. I get the broken piece out, then inspect the cylinder. On a 30-year-old ignition, a snapped key almost always means the cylinder wafers have seen some wear. Sometimes the break just happens from metal fatigue on an old key, and the cylinder is fine. Other times the wafers are bent or the cylinder is ready to give out anyway. I diagnose that on site.

Q: My 1995 Grand Prix ignition feels loose and the key turns too easily. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Almost always the ignition. These GM cylinders from the mid-90s are known for wearing out the internal wafers over time, especially if the car has high miles or has had multiple key copies cut over the years. A worn cylinder can get so loose it'll turn with almost anything, or it can get to the point where it won't return from the start position cleanly.

Q: Can a locksmith cut a key for my 1995 Grand Prix without the original?

Yes, that's a standard job. I decode the lock directly, which tells me the correct cut to make. No original key needed, no VIN lookup delay, no waiting on a dealer to pull records. I cut to the lock, not to a guess.

1995 Pontiac Grand Prix Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Wilson, I got a call from a guy who had been driving on a worn-down key copy for months. The original was long gone.

He'd had a copy made at a hardware store at some point, then a copy of that copy, and by the time he called me the key would start the car maybe seven times out of ten. The other three times he was sitting there wiggling it.

I pulled up to his place with the decoding tools. Read the lock right on site, confirmed the key code, and cut a fresh key to the correct specification. Not a copy of a worn key. A key cut to what the lock actually calls for.

He turned it the first time and it went smooth, full rotation, no wiggling. That's the difference between tracing a bad key and doing it right.

He mentioned he'd called a dealer earlier in the week just to ask. They were going to have him tow it in and wait. I was done on his driveway in under half an hour, and he paid a fraction of what they quoted him.

Pontiac Grand Prix Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix key have any buttons or remote functions?▼

None. The 1995 Grand Prix uses a plain metal key with no remote, no buttons, and no fob. If you want keyless entry on one of these, that would have been a separate aftermarket add-on, not something that's part of the key itself. The replacement is purely mechanical: cut the blade to the vehicle and you're done.
