Got a call from a guy in Oxnard Auto Center who was standing next to his 1999 Grand Prix in a dealership service lot, which was kind of ironic. He had gone in for something unrelated, came back out, and the car would crank for about two seconds and die. Theft System light on the dash, solid. Classic PK3 Passlock behavior.
He told me the dealer wanted to order a new ignition lock cylinder assembly and reprogram the body control module. Multiple days. He just needed to get home.
I got there and checked the key first. The resistor pellet in the blade was worn smooth on one side from years of use. The Passlock sensor inside the steering column was reading the wrong resistance value and killing the fuel injectors right after crank. The BCM (the 09369071 board on these W-bodies) stores the learned resistance, and once the reading drifts too far, it shuts you down every time.
Cut a fresh PK3 key with the correct pellet value, ran the relearn procedure through the ignition cycle method (leave the key on for ten minutes, off, repeat three times), and the BCM accepted the new resistance. THEFT SYSTEM light went off. Engine ran and stayed running.
He sat there for a second watching the tach hold steady at idle like he did not trust it yet. I get that. When a car has been refusing to start, the first clean idle feels suspicious.
Whole thing took less time than the dealer's intake paperwork.
