I was parked near The Collection in Oxnard, wrapping up a different job, when the call came in about a 1999 Grand Prix. Owner said the remote stopped working on two of the four buttons. Lock worked, one other button worked, and the remaining two were dead silent. He had already swapped the battery.
When I got there, I asked him how he had swapped the battery. He showed me. He had pried the case open on the wrong seam and bent the internal contact plate slightly in the process. The CR2032 was fine. The contact was not making full pressure on two of the terminal pads.
I bent the contact back with a small pick, reseated everything, snapped the case closed the right way, and walked every button. All four working. He just stared at it for a second.
He had already priced a replacement at the dealer. The quote he got was enough to make the call to me feel like the obvious move in hindsight. That part barely came up in conversation. We were both just glad it was the simple fix.
