Out near Lake Casitas Recreation Area in Ventura, a guy flagged me down from the parking area by the lake. His 2000 Grand Prix GT just quit on him. Engine cranked but would not fire, and the yellow SECURITY light was sitting there on the dash, solid, not blinking.
He had already tried the thing he read online: turn the key to ON, wait ten minutes for the light to go off, turn it back off, repeat three times. The GM relearn procedure. It half-worked once, then the car died again at idle thirty seconds later.
The PASS-Lock II sensor inside his ignition cylinder was giving the BCM a bad resistance reading. These go bad constantly on W-body Grand Prix cars. The sensor wears out, the signal drifts, and the BCM thinks the wrong key is in the lock.
I pulled my Autel IM608, connected at the OBD-II port under the dash, and ran the PASS-Lock relearn through the Body Control Module. Read the current resistance value, programmed it into the BCM so it matched what the worn sensor was actually sending. No parts swap needed that day.
Cut him a fresh B102 key on site too, since his original was so worn the sidebar was barely catching. He sat in a camp chair by his car the whole time, watching the lake, looking a lot more relaxed than when I pulled up.
The dealer in Ventura quoted him a tow plus a multi-day wait. He drove home that afternoon for a fraction of what they wanted.
