Got a call from a guy parked near the marina in Via Marina, Oxnard. He'd had the key duplicated at a hardware store a few months back and never tested it for starting, only for the doors. The original wore out and snapped, and now he was standing next to his 2008 Grand Prix with a key that turned the ignition but wouldn't fire the car.
He told me the engine would crank, catch for a second, then die. The security light on the dash would come on and stay on. He thought it was a fuel issue. It wasn't.
I pulled up, looked at the copy key, and could see right away it had been cut on a standard edge-cut duplicator from a hardware chain. The cut was close but the transponder chip inside was never programmed. Hardware stores can copy the blade. They can't touch the chip.
I cut a fresh key on my machine, programmed the transponder through the OBD port, and tested it. Cranked, started, security light off. Done on site, no tow, no waiting around for a dealer appointment. He asked what the dealer would have charged and I told him to call and find out. He didn't bother.
