Got a call from a guy over in the RiverPark neighborhood in Oxnard. His 2005 Grand Prix was sitting in the driveway, turning over but refusing to start. SECURITY light glowing steady on the dash. He'd already tried the 10-minute relearn three times, the one where you leave the key on for ten minutes, turn it off, repeat. Didn't take.
I pulled up and popped the lower steering column cover. The Passlock II sensor inside the lock cylinder had drifted out of its resistance range. The body control module was reading a value it didn't recognize, so it killed the fuel injectors. Classic failure on these W-body GMs.
Replaced the lock cylinder and Passlock sensor, then ran the relearn procedure through the BCM so the module would accept the new resistance signature. Cut a fresh 5928820 key blank to factory spec on the van, tested the ignition, tested the doors, tested the trunk. SECURITY light cycled and went off like it should.
He told me he almost had it towed to the dealer. They quoted him over a week wait just to look at it, and the parts-and-labor number they threw out made him keep searching. Whole thing took me about 45 minutes in his driveway.
He went back inside, came out with a second key blank he'd bought online, and asked me to cut that one too. Smart move. Now he's got a spare.
