2002 Pontiac Grand Prix
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you wipe out lost or stolen keys so they can't start the car anymore?

Yes. When I do an all-keys-lost reset, the previously learned transponder data gets cleared from the vehicle's computer. Only the new keys I program during that job will start the car going forward. If your key was stolen or you just don't know where it ended up, that's the move.

Q: My 2002 Grand Prix uses a regular key, not a fob. Does it have anything hidden inside it?

No hidden blade, no fob, no battery. The key for this car is a single metal key with a chip molded into the plastic head. There's nothing to flip out or pop open. What matters is that the blade is cut correctly to operate the ignition and door locks, and that the chip inside the head is programmed to match your vehicle.

Q: My security light stays on after I start the car. Is that a key programming problem?

On a 2002 Grand Prix, the security light behavior tells you a lot. Normally it flashes briefly when you first turn the key and then goes out once the immobilizer reads the chip. If the light stays solid after the engine starts, or if the car starts and then dies within a few seconds with the light on, that points to the immobilizer not recognizing the transponder correctly.

Q: Can I program a spare transponder key myself at home?

Not on this one. The 2002 Grand Prix does not have a self-programming sequence for transponder keys the way some vehicles from other manufacturers do. Adding a key requires either a professional programmer connected to the OBD port or the proper equipment to write the chip directly. Buying a pre-cut blank online and hoping to pair it yourself won't work.

2002 Pontiac Grand Prix Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call out to Midtown Ventura on a Tuesday afternoon. Guy had a 2002 Grand Prix, one key, and that key had snapped off right at the bow, the plastic head, leaving just the bare blade. He'd been starting the car by holding the broken head against the ignition while turning the blade with a pair of pliers. That works exactly until it doesn't.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him to tow it in, quoted him a number that made him pause, and said they'd need a day or two to fit him in. He found me instead.

I pulled up, he handed me the broken head and the blade separately. The blade was actually in decent shape, not worn down, so I could decode it right there. Cut a new key on the mobile unit, then transferred the chip from the old head into the new key. When that's not possible, I program a fresh blank through the OBD port.

Tested it. Started first try, no hesitation, no security light sitting on.

He said he'd been running the pliers routine for almost two weeks. Didn't need the dealer, didn't need a tow, and didn't spend what they quoted him. Whole thing took maybe thirty minutes in his driveway.

Pontiac Grand Prix Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2002 Grand Prix?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you even think about a tow truck. All-keys-lost on a transponder vehicle means the car won't start with any key until new ones are programmed, but that doesn't mean it needs to go to a dealer lot to get fixed. I come to wherever the car is sitting, decode the lock or use the key code, cut a working key, and program the transponder through the OBD port.
