Got a call from a guy down in Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard. His 2004 Grand Prix had been sitting in his driveway for two days because the SECURITY light was on and the engine would crank but not fire. He'd already tried waiting the 10 minutes, turning the key back off, starting again. The classic Passlock relearn. It worked once, then failed the next morning.
He thought he needed new keys. Told me he lost one of his two originals a while back and figured that was connected somehow.
When I got there, I checked the ignition cylinder first. The Passlock II sensor inside the housing was giving inconsistent resistance readings to the body control module. That's what triggers the 10-minute security lockout and kills fuel. The BCM sees a resistance value it doesn't recognize and assumes theft.
I cut him a fresh Strattec 5928820 key, decoded right off the door lock on the spot. Then I ran the Passlock relearn through the OBD-II port with my diagnostic tool, which resets the BCM's stored resistance value to match the sensor cleanly. No 30-minute three-cycle manual relearn sitting in the car staring at the dash.
Tested the start five times cold, cycled the key, let it sit. SECURITY light stayed off every time. He stood there with his arms crossed for the last two starts like he was waiting for it to betray him again.
The dealer in Oxnard quoted him a tow plus a multi-day wait for a cylinder diagnosis. He drove to the grocery store instead.
