Got a call from a guy out near Ventura River Preserve. His 2001 Grand Prix just quit on him. Engine cranked but would not fire, and the SECURITY light on the dash was glowing solid. He had already sat through the ten-minute relearn cycle three times in a row, following advice from a Grand Prix forum. Nothing changed.
He told me the dealer wanted him to tow it in and quoted him days of wait time on top of parts and labor. He was not thrilled.
When I got there, I checked the basics first. The Passlock II sensor in the steering column was giving the BCM a signal it did not like. On these W-body Grand Prix cars, that sensor sits right on the lock cylinder housing and reads a small resistor value. When it drifts or fails, the BCM sees a mismatch and kills the fuel injectors. The starter works fine, which tricks people into thinking it is a fuel pump or ignition issue.
I pulled the column covers, accessed the Passlock sensor connector at C305 on the steering column harness, and tested the resistance values against spec. The sensor was out of range. Replaced it, performed the relearn through the BCM using the Auto Pro Pad, and waited through that ten-minute security timer one last time.
Car fired right up. He sat in the driver seat for a second, just listening to it idle, like he did not trust it yet. I get that.
Whole job done on site, for a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost him.
