Got a call from a guy over in the Silver Strand neighborhood in Oxnard. His 2007 Grand Prix would crank all day long but never fire. The SECURITY light on the dash just sat there blinking at him.
He had already been through the 10-minute relearn twice in his driveway. Turn the key to ON, wait for the SECURITY light to go off, turn it back, repeat three times. It worked the first time he tried it a few weeks back. This time, nothing.
The issue with these W-body Grand Prix cars is Passlock III. The sensor module inside the lock cylinder reads a magnetic value off the key, sends it to the body control module, and the BCM decides if the fuel injectors get to do their job. When that sensor starts drifting, the relearn trick buys you a few more starts until it drifts again. GM released TSB 02-05-25-002C years ago covering Passlock problems across a pile of their models, and owners on the Grand Prix forums have been complaining about it since these cars were new.
I pulled up to his place, connected through the OBD-II port, and programmed a fresh 5928820 key blank cut on my portable machine right there in his driveway. Ran the full Passlock relearn through the Tech2 scan tool instead of the manual method, which locks the new key value into the BCM properly.
He had the car running in under 40 minutes. No tow to the dealer, no week-long wait for a VIN-cut key order.
