1999 Porsche Boxster
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my 1999 Boxster to the dealer if I have no keys?

No. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment can decode the lock on-site and cut a working key without moving the car. The dealer's path typically involves ordering a replacement key by code through their parts system, which can mean waiting days and paying for their time on top of it. For a mechanical key on a car this age, there's no reason to involve a dealer unless the ignition cylinder itself needs replacement parts they'd have to source.

Q: How long does it take to get a replacement key made for a 1999 Boxster?

On-site, usually under an hour once I'm at the vehicle. Decoding the lock cylinder and cutting the blade is a faster process than anything involving programming or module work. If you have the original key code from your paperwork or the door lock tag, it goes even quicker. The actual cut takes minutes. The time is in the travel and the lock work, not the key itself.

Q: My new key turns the ignition but feels rough or catches. Is the key cut wrong?

Maybe, but probably not. Early Boxster ignition cylinders wear over time, and a correctly cut key will sometimes feel stiff or gritty in a cylinder that's seen 25 years of use. Before assuming the cut is off, try the door lock. If it turns cleanly there and rough in the ignition, the cylinder is the likely culprit, not the key.

Q: Can I get a spare key made while I still have my original, or do I have to wait until I lose it?

Don't wait. A spare cut from your working original is the easiest version of this job. I can duplicate the key directly from the blade you have. Once you're down to zero keys and working from a worn or damaged lock, the job gets longer and costs more. Get the spare cut now while the original is clean and readable.

1999 Porsche Boxster Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call out to West Simi Valley on a Saturday morning. Guy had a 1999 Boxster sitting in his driveway, top down, going nowhere. His only key had snapped off at the bow, right where the metal meets the plastic head. Half the blade was still in the door lock.

He'd already tried fishing it out himself with a bobby pin. That made it worse.

I extracted the broken piece from the door lock without pulling the cylinder, which saved him a full disassembly. Once I had the broken blade in my hand, I could read the cuts directly off it and use that to cut a new key. No key code needed, no digging through records.

The new key turned both the door and the ignition on the first try. He stood there for a second like he expected something else to happen. Then he just got in and started it.

He mentioned a dealer in the area had quoted him a tow plus a parts wait. I was done before noon and he paid a fraction of that.

Porsche Boxster Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 1999 Boxster. Can you still make one?▼

Yes. Because the 1999 Boxster uses a mechanical key, all-keys-lost is actually more manageable than it sounds. There's no immobilizer module to reset and no key memory to wipe. The job comes down to decoding the lock and cutting a replacement blade to match. The two main paths are pulling the lock cylinder and decoding it directly, or looking up the key code through the vehicle's records if you have access to the original paperwork.
