2002 Porsche Boxster
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my Boxster to the dealer if I have no key?

No. The 2002 Boxster takes a mechanical key, which means a locksmith with the right decoder and a code cutter can come to wherever the car is sitting and produce a key on site. The dealer needs the car in their shop partly because of how they bill labor and partly because not every service writer knows what a mobile locksmith can do. You're not stuck. Call us first.

Q: How long does a replacement key take for a 2002 Boxster?

Usually 20 to 30 minutes on site. Decoding the lock takes a few minutes, cutting the key blade takes a few more, and then we test it in both the door and the ignition before we leave. No programming step, no waiting on a module to cycle through a timed relearn. It's one of the faster jobs in the book once I'm at the car.

Q: My Boxster key turns hard and sometimes doesn't come back out smoothly. Do I need a new cylinder or just a new key?

More often than not, it's the key, not the cylinder. On a car this age, the original key has usually been used thousands of times and the cuts wear down gradually. The lock's wafers follow the worn key and the whole system drifts together, so it feels like the lock is worn when the key is actually the weak link. Decode the lock, cut a fresh key to the original specification, and test it.

Q: Can I get a spare key made at a hardware store or does it have to be a locksmith?

A hardware kiosk can duplicate the physical shape of the key, but that's copying whatever wear is already on your original. If your existing key is even slightly worn, the copy inherits those same imperfections, sometimes worse. On an ignition cylinder that's already a little stiff, a soft duplicate copy can make the problem worse or simply not work at all. A locksmith decodes the lock and cuts to the correct specification, not to the worn key in your hand.

2002 Porsche Boxster Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I drove out to Windsor North on a Tuesday morning for a 2002 Boxster. The owner had one key left, and it was getting to the point where he had to jiggle it to get the ignition to turn. He was worried the cylinder was going.

I decoded the lock on site. The key he'd been using for years had worn down enough that a few cuts were off from the original specification. The lock itself was fine. The key was the problem, and every copy made from that worn key for the past decade had just passed the wear along.

I cut a fresh key to the decoded spec, not to the worn bitting on his original. First try, clean turn, no jiggle.

He mentioned he'd called a dealer in Ventura County about getting a replacement. They were going to order a new key by the key code on file, which is the right idea, but the wait and the cost made him put it off for two years. I did it the same morning he called, in his driveway, for a fraction of what they wanted.

Porsche Boxster Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys for my 2002 Boxster. Can you still make one?▼

Yes. All-keys-lost on a mechanical key vehicle is actually more manageable than on newer cars. There are no stored key IDs to wipe, no module procedures, and no programming countdown timers. The job is cutting a working key from scratch. We do that one of two ways: decode the lock cylinders directly on the car, or look up the key code through the VIN if records are available. Either way, we can produce a working key on site.
