Got a call from a guy down in Channel Islands Beach in Oxnard. His 2002 Boxster was sitting in the driveway, cranking but not firing. He had already replaced the fuel pump relay and checked the starter. Spent a whole weekend under the car.
He mentioned something that caught my ear right away. He only had one key, and the plastic housing on the head was cracked open. The transponder chip inside had been rattling loose for months. He thought it was just cosmetic damage.
On the 986 Boxster, the transponder talks to a ring antenna around the ignition switch, and the immobilizer logic lives inside the instrument cluster itself. If that chip shifts even slightly out of alignment with the antenna, the cluster never gets a valid transponder read. The engine cranks because the mechanical part of the key still turns, but the immobilizer kills fuel injection.
I brought a replacement key blank, cut it to match, and programmed the new transponder through the diagnostic port using PIN-based registration. The PIN is pulled from the vehicle data, not guessed. Whole thing took about 40 minutes on site.
He just sat on the front steps and watched the mid-engine idle settle in like he forgot what it sounded like. Two weeks of chasing the wrong problem, fixed with the right key.
