2000 Porsche Boxster
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you delete lost or stolen keys from my 2000 Boxster so they no longer work?

On this generation Boxster the key is purely mechanical. There is no electronic registration, so there is nothing to delete from a module. If a key is lost or stolen, the way to address that security concern is rekeying the locks. That means having the door locks and ignition cylinder changed so the old key profile no longer works, then cutting new keys to the new profile.

Q: Does my 2000 Boxster key have a hidden emergency blade inside the fob?

No. The 2000 Boxster does not use a fob at all. The key for this car is a standalone metal blade, cut to the lock profile. There is no remote, no flip mechanism, no hidden insert. The key you turn in the door is the same key you turn in the ignition. If you have lost it, the replacement is a freshly cut blade, nothing more.

Q: Can I get a replacement key cut at a hardware store or do I need a locksmith?

A standard hardware store probably cannot help you. The key blade on this Boxster is a higher-security profile than a common house key or a basic domestic car key, and most hardware store machines are not set up for it. You need either a locksmith with the right blank and cutting equipment, or a Porsche dealer with the original key code on file.

Q: My key turns hard in the ignition and sometimes does not come back out smoothly. Is the key worn or is something wrong with the cylinder?

Could be both, and on a 2000 Boxster that has been around for a while, this is a real thing to pay attention to. A worn key blade will have slightly rounded cuts that no longer engage the tumblers cleanly, which puts extra stress on the cylinder every time you use it. Over time that wears the cylinder tumblers too, and now you have two problems feeding each other.

2000 Porsche Boxster Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call on a Saturday morning from someone parked near Carriage Square in Oxnard. He had a 2000 Boxster, the top was down, and his only key was somewhere on the floorboard of an Uber he'd taken the night before. Gone. The car was just sitting there looking good and completely useless.

He asked me over the phone if this was going to be complicated. I told him it was actually one of the cleaner jobs I do. No modules, no programming, no sitting around while something counts down. Just the lock and the blade.

I drove out, decoded the driver door lock cylinder while he watched, cut a replacement blade on my machine right there in the parking lot, and handed it to him. He slid it in, turned it, and the door opened. Then the ignition. Car started without a second thought.

He mentioned he'd called the dealer before calling me. They told him to bring it in, which would have meant towing it, and they weren't sure on the timeline. He saved a good chunk and had the key in his hand before noon.

The whole thing was about as low-drama as car key work gets. That is not always the case, but for this generation Boxster, it is a clean job done on site.

Porsche Boxster Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2000 Porsche Boxster?▼

For this generation Boxster, all-keys-lost is not the complicated scenario it is on newer Porsches. There is no key-learning session, no module to reset, no security data to retrieve. The car needs a key cut to match the lock, and that is the whole job. A mobile locksmith can decode the lock on site and cut a replacement blade without towing the car anywhere.
