Over near The Collection in Oxnard, a photographer had a rough afternoon. He was shooting nearby and his key blade snapped clean off in the door lock of his 2007 Boxster. It had been years since he actually used that door cylinder. I got out to him, pulled the broken fragment from the cylinder without touching the lock body, and decoded the cut right off the door. Cut a fresh key blade to match. No drilling, no cylinder replacement, no parts to wait on. The car opened, the ignition turned, and he was back to his shoot.
When I told him the other locksmith's approach was not wrong in theory, just premature, he nodded. Drilling is the last move, not the first. A 987 Boxster door cylinder is serviceable without destruction if you have the right extraction tools and a bit of patience. He saved a good chunk over what the other quote was going to run him.
