2006 Porsche Boxster
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: I lost my only key. Is all-keys-lost on a 2006 Boxster harder than just adding a spare?

On a 987 Boxster with a mechanical key, all-keys-lost is simpler than people expect compared to later Porsche models. There is no stored key-ID list to wipe, no module that needs resetting before a new key works. The job is decoding the lock or pulling the key code by VIN and cutting a new blade that matches. The more important lesson is still the same one: get a spare cut while you have a working key.

Q: Are aftermarket keys for the 2006 Boxster worth buying, or should I stick with OEM?

For a 987 Boxster mechanical key, the blade is what matters. The key has to match the cut profile and fit the ignition cylinder and door locks cleanly. Cheap blanks can be slightly off in thickness or tip geometry and will wear your cylinder faster or just bind. We use quality blanks that match the correct profile for this car so the key turns smoothly and lasts.

Q: Can a locksmith pull my key code by VIN so I never have to decode the lock?

Sometimes, but it depends on whether that data is accessible and current. Porsche does keep key codes tied to VIN through their dealer system, and some locksmith data services carry records for vehicles in this generation. When the code is on file and verified, cutting by code is clean and fast. When it is not on file or the data does not match, decoding the lock directly is just as accurate and gets you the same result.

Q: My 2006 Boxster key turns but feels stiff or grinds in the ignition. Do I need a new key or a new cylinder?

Start with the key. A worn blade that is even slightly off profile will drag against the wafers in the cylinder and feel rough. If you have been using a copy of a copy, that wear compounds fast. Try the original if you still have it. If the original also grinds, the cylinder wafers may be worn or the lock needs lubrication. A locksmith can tell you on site whether the problem is the key, the cylinder, or both.

2006 Porsche Boxster Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was in the parking structure off Via Marina in Oxnard with her son after dinner when her bag was snatched. Keys, wallet, phone, gone. Her son called the police from his own phone, then his father, then me.

The 2006 Boxster was sitting in that structure with no key at all. Her husband called the Porsche dealer and got an earful: tow required, days-long wait, bring the title and registration, and a number that made him go quiet on the phone for a second.

I got there that evening. The job on a 987 Boxster with a mechanical key is reading the lock. I decoded the ignition cylinder, confirmed the cut, and made her a new key on site. No tow. No waiting on a VIN request. No week-long lead time.

She drove home that night with her son. The dealer estimate involved a tow and a wait that stretched into next week. We were done before the police finished writing the report.

Porsche Boxster Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a key for a 2006 Porsche Boxster?▼

Call a mobile locksmith first. The dealer route on a 987 Boxster typically means scheduling an appointment, possibly a tow if you have no working key, a VIN-based key-code request that can take days, and a final bill that reflects all of that overhead. A mobile locksmith decodes the lock on site, cuts the replacement key to your vehicle, and you are done the same visit. No tow, no multi-day wait, and a fraction of what the dealer quoted.
